This Weekend At Crux

We’ve fought our way through January – now the year can begin proper. And Crux (Providence Street, Wakefield) is honouring us with two gigs across the first weekend of February.

On Friday Feb 3rd, Cowtown will headline a great little lineup, also featuring Pepe Sylvia and Azores. I think I last saw Cowtown supporting bis in Leeds; they are a band that have always been excellent, and I fear actually asking Google how long they have been going as I remember them from way back but it’s no lie to say they’ve been at their best and still getting better over the last year or two. Songs that have the short sharpness of great punk singles but in place of aggression and noise is, well, joy and noise instead. Great that they are back in Wakefield.

I really enjoyed Pepe Sylvia when they played the secret Drahla show at Crux 2 a while back. I can’t completely remember their sound and it doesn’t appear they have any recordings yet to jog my memory, so I am going to say a mix of Pains Of Being Pure At Heart harmonic wall of noise without the twee, mixed with something more interesting and hope i’ve got that right.

Finally Azores will be opening up who I don’t think i’ve caught before, but a No-Wave Supergroup (that is, a mix of people from other bands influenced by No Wave, not actual members of Sonic Youth and Suicide) sounds fun.

On Saturday Feb 4th we have what I believe is the debut show from Dark Horse, a collaboration between Matt Knee and Rosie Doonan, plus other assorted members of our musical community. Philophobia Chief Beard Rob Dee tells me this is his ‘Radio 2’ band, which sounds like a backhanded compliment if ever there were one, but the recently released clips from the upcoming EP do make sense of the comment – certainly more Dermot O’Leary than Steve Wright with pristine production and a sound that brings to mind a folk-rock Charlotte Hatherley. With support from Ryan Spendlove and Charlie Padfield, it’ll be a great night.

Entry is so cheap i’m not even going to say what it is. And the Crux bar is cheap and they have nice sofas, so go make yourself at home.
